How does it work?

  1. Apply for a tutoring job - when you see a job available that you want you can apply for the job with the coordinator. Each job is allocated an individual coordinator (see details on applying below)
  2. Tutor allocation - if we allocate you to the job we will let you know and send you the details (client name, venue, and rate +/- R140/hr) and a time-sheet.
  3. Time-sheet - fill in the time-sheet after each lesson and your bank details at the bottom of the time-sheet.
  4. Payment - Please message the coordinator with the job numbers of the clients you tutored so they can check you time-sheet and pay you. We will EFT you payment within the first four days of each month for the previous month.
  5. Client retention is VERY IMPORTANT. Please make sure you let your coordinator know when your client needs to buy more hours. There will be an alert that will automatically show up when they need to purchase more hours. Please notify your coordinator immediately so that they can contact the client.

Top Ten Tips! Applying for Jobs

1. Introduce yourself

We have over a thousand tutors so it's important that you stand out from the crowd. Introduce yourself to the coordinators. Send a Whatsapp to say hi and let the coordinators know who you are, where you are and what you can teach. If you've filled in the application form they can look you up on the system if they need more information.

2. Apply for jobs in or close to your area

this reduces travel expenses and time spent getting to the job.

3. Check your availability

Make sure that you are available in the requested times. If the client has not given times be sure to let us know when you are available. We realize the Varsity timetables change so we ask that you let us know each time you apply for a job.

4. Be selective

Make sure that the subject requested is one that you are able to tutor.

5. Make sure the job is still available

Check the comments section on the job posted. We will let you know if the job is no longer available.

6. Be fast!

We want to improve our turnaround time so that we can place a tutor with a client within 24 hours. The sooner you let us know you're available the better.

7. Whatsapp the coordinator

We dig using Whatsapp. On the Facebook Tutors Group, tutor coordinators leave their number. Often coordinators are not in the office so if you send them a Whatsapp this will speed up the process.

8. Sell yourself

If there is something you didn't mention in your original application that might help you get the job, feel free to say it now!

9. Get a picture profile

You'll notice on our website that some of the tutors have picture profiles. This is a friendly way of introducing you to the client. If you would like a picture profile check out some of the profiles on the site and send a photo to nick [at] pretoriatutors [dot] com with accompanying text. We regret that if the photo is not sufficient quality for our website we won't be able to feature it. You will then need to apply to be photographed at one of our professional portrait photo shoots.  Email nick [at] pretoriatutors [dot] com if you would like to be added to the list for our next photography portrait shoot.

10. Get a reference

If you have tutored before, even if it's for family or friends ask them to write you a reference.
